New IRS Security Measures to Protect Against Identity Theft

Starting in the new year, the Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) Opt-In Program will be available to all taxpayers who can verify their identities. This decision was made during National Tax Security Awareness Week and provides extra protection for taxpayers just in time for tax season. This PIN prevents someone else from filing a tax return with your Social Security Number. The video below explains the IP PIN program and how to get started.

This is an opt-in program, which means you will not be automatically registered. However, the IRS urges taxpayers to take the time to register an IP PIN to protect themselves against cyber criminals who may try to take advantage of the chaos that COVID-19 has created.
